COMING SOON! Proton Saga FLX SE 1.6L with CVT leaked

The ultimate Proton Saga is coming soon! Thanks to reader Ali, we have scans of a Proton brochure featuring “The new Saga FLX SE 1.6L with CVT”. Proton has thrown everything at the name, and it’s a mouthful, but all we need to know is that this upcoming variant is the range topper, the SE of the current Saga FLX range, equipped with the Campro 1.6L engine and CVT gearbox.
Currently, the Saga FLX with continuous variable transmission (CVT) is only available with a 1.3L Campro (launched in July, read our test drive report here). Proton has a 1.6-litre powered Saga – the Executive 1.6L – but that one was launched before the FLX with CVT, so it comes with a four-speed torque converter automatic ‘box.

So with this new FLX SE variant, Proton is marrying what’s good from both cars (1.6L + CVT) and sweetens it further with the usual sporty SE add ons.
Upon closer inspection, the FLX SE’s 1.6L Campro puts out 108 hp at 5,750 rpm and 150 Nm at 4,000 rpm. The current Executive 1.6L with 4AT makes 110 hp at 6,500 rpm and 148 Nm at 4,000 rpm. Nothing significant, except that peak power is made 750 rpm lower in the CVT equipped FLX SE. The variance seen here is probably due to the engine being retuned to match the CVT.

The FLX SE is available in Fire Red (as seen here) or Solid White, and it wears a full bodykit that is painted grey to contrast with the red. This hue is repeated on the strip above the grille and the side skirts; although likely, we can’t confirm if the lower rear bumper is in the same colour. At the back, the lamp cluster is now in clear lense/silver style for maximum bling effect.
The SE comes with 15-inch eight-spoke alloy rims, the first time a Saga is leaving the factory wearing rims bigger than 14 ins. Along with that comes wider tyres – 195/50 compared to the current 185/60.

Equipment wise, the Saga FLX SE gets leather seats, leather wrapped wheel, stereo with MP3/USB/AUX, dual airbags, ABS + EBD, steering audio buttons and driver’s seat height adjuster, among other kit. The meter panel now has a white backlight, no longer orange, and the centre console, door handles and air-con vents are trimmed in Satin Black.
Currently, the Saga Elegance 1.6L is priced at RM46,549. How much do you think this FLX SE 1.6L with CVT will cost? As a marker, automatic variants of Perodua’s Myvi SE 1.5 start from RM53,900, going all the way to RM61,700.

Proton still producing Satria Neo

SUBANG JAYA: Proton said the company was still producing Satria Neo as a replacement model for the first generation Satria.


Group managing director Datuk Seri Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir said Proton was shifting the manufacturing of the model to its main plant in Shah Alam from Tanjung Malim.


Syed Zainal was responding to a news report that Satria Neo was nearing the end of its production cycle.

Proton is keeping the Satria Neo but dropping the Savvy.



Speaking at a press conference here, he said Proton was re-arranging its facilities at the Tanjung Malim plant in preparation for new models.


Meanwhile, Syed Zainal said Proton has decided to discontinue the Savvy, introduced in June 2005, as a successor to the Tiara model, and was also phasing out the Gen.2 model from the domestic market.


“We are shifting the production of Gen.2 and as you know, we are talking to our partners in China and Iran to assemble the model there. We are still in negotiations,” he said.


Syed Zainal also said Proton, which emerged as a dominant force this year to clinch the coveted Asia Pacific Rally Championship (APRC) Manufacturer’s and Driver’s titles, was committed to be better in both competition and in the manufacture of production vehicles for the global market.


Pitting the Satria Neo S2000 against the likes of Mitsubishi and Subaru, the national car manufacturer won four of the six APRC rounds this year.


“It is our goal to have our achievements and the technology derived in competition transcend into our future generation of vehicles.


“Motorsports is a cost-effective and wide-reaching platform which we believe offers tremendous value and return on investment,” Syed Zainal added.



Engineer’s Wira to get Proton makeover

KUALA LUMPUR: Proton has picked a building engineer as the first winner of its “Very Important Proton” Makeover programme.

The programme is part of the company’s “Committed to be Better” initiative and the R3 unit of PROTON’s Motorsports Department would do a makeover on Sashideran Radha Krishnan’s 17 year-old Proton Wira.

“Sashideran’s story was so well written that it would be wrong not to reward him and his family for the love they shower on the car,” said Proton director of group marketing, branding and motorsports John Chacko in a statement Monday.

In his submission for the contest, Sashideran, 24, said his “darling Wira”, as he calls her, is more than just a car, as it has become a member of his family.

“At one time, she sheltered me when I was away from home with no money to spare, becoming my room and bed for the night,” he added.

The contest would also reward four more Proton car owners with a complete makeover of their cars.

Sashideran’s “new” Proton Wira would be returned to him in November.

Those with a memorable story to share about their Proton cars are invited to submit their stories at to stand a chance for a makeover.

Closing date for entries is Dec 28.
